What is silicone rubber (VMQ)?

Silicone rubber (VMQ, vinyl methyl silicone rubber) is a Rubber based on polysiloxanes, which is known for its exceptional temperature and weather resistance as well as its physiological harmlessness. The molecular structure of silicon-oxygen bonds gives VMQ high thermal stability and very good flexibility over a wide temperature range.

This makes this material particularly suitable for applications in which temperature changes coincide with weather influences or physiological requirements.

Properties of silicone rubber (VMQ)

  • Very wide temperature application range from approx. -50 °C until +210 °C
  • Excellent low-temperature flexibility and elasticity across the temperature range
  • Excellent resistance to ozone, UV and weathering
  • Very good electrical insulating properties
  • Physiological harmlessness, suitable for food and medical technology (with corresponding formulation/approval)
  • Good sterilisability with hot air or steam
  • Good resistance to many polar chemicals and aqueous media
  • Limited resistance to Oils, fuels and aromatic hydrocarbons

Application areas & material combinations of silicone rubber (VMQ)

VMQ is used in Seals, Sealing lips, O-rings, hoses, Valves and membranes, particularly in the food, medical, pharmaceutical and electrical engineering industries. Typical applications are Seals in ovens, coffee machines, laboratory equipment, sterilisers and air conditioning systems.

For use in Rubber-metal composite parts or Rubber-fabric composites durable, flexible assemblies for demanding environments. For increased fuel and Oil resistance VMQ is often converted by fluorination to fluorosilicone (FVMQ) modified.
