Motor Mount – Isolation of Vibrations and Noise

What are engine dampers?

Motor mounts are elastic bearing and connecting elements that decouple motors or drives from their surroundings to isolate vibrations and noise. They prevent vibrations generated during operation from being transmitted to the housing, machine, or vehicle chassis. At the same time, they secure the motor in its position and absorb static and dynamic forces. Their function is based on the elasticity and damping effect of the material – usually a specially tuned rubber or a rubber-metal composite. The material converts kinetic energy into heat, thus damping vibrations.

je nach Anforderung werden Motordämpfer als reine Molded Rubber for simple decoupling tasks performed or as Metal Composite Parts, in which the elastomer is firmly vulcanised with metallic inserts – for higher loads and precise force transmission. Where weight-saving designs are required or a direct connection to plastic carriers is necessary, Plastic Composite Parts for use, combining elasticity and dimensional stability in a component.

Typical designs are

  • Cylinder or cone damper with centric screw connection
  • Angular contact or conical bearings for accommodating combined loads
  • Hydraulic Engine damper with liquid-filled damping system
  • Multi-layered Rubber-metal elements for high-performance applications

Motor dampers can be designed to have different stiffnesses in the axial, radial and torsional directions in order to effectively absorb vibrations and at the same time ensure the stability of the assembly.

What functions and areas of application do engine mounts have?

Motor dampers are installed as coupling elements between the motor and the surrounding structure and, thanks to their elastic structure, make it possible to compensate for vibrations and shocks that occur during motor operation.

Functions at a glance:

  • Vibration dampingReduction of motor vibrations
  • Noise reduction: acoustic decoupling of motor and housing
  • Bearing and positioning: Supporting the dead weight and securing the motor position
  • Shock absorption: Protection of the unit during dynamic load changes
  • Power transmission: firm connection with controlled elastic mobility at the same time
  • Service life extension: Reduction of material fatigue on neighbouring components and on the unit itself

Typical applications:

  • Vehicle technology: engine mounts and transmission mounts in cars, lorries, motorbikes and agricultural machinery
  • Mechanical engineering: Vibration isolation of combustion engines or electric motors in pumps, compressors and generators
  • Rail vehicles: elastic mounting of drives and units for noise reduction
  • Marine and boat construction: vibration-damped engine mounts against structure-borne noise transmission to hull structures
  • Energy and building technology: Storage of emergency power generators, air conditioning compressors and fans

Motor dampers are relevant components for the overall performance of a system. Their design is based on the vibrating mass, forces to be transmitted, operating frequency (range) and installation position in order to achieve an optimum insulation and damping effect.

Welche Bauteile und Materialien von Motordämpfern gibt es?

Engine dampers consist of a combination of elastic and load-bearing materials that are specifically adapted to the respective loads. Metal or plastic supports absorb static forces, while the rubber body provides dynamic damping.

Typical materials:

  • NBRoil and fuel resistant, frequently used in engine and machine construction
  • NRhigh elasticity, good cushioning at medium temperatures
  • EPDMWeather and ozone resistant, well suited for outdoor applications
  • SiliconeTemperature-resistant from -60 °C to +200 °C, vibration-insulating even in high temperature ranges
  • FKMchemically resistant, resistant to fuels and lubricating oils
  • Metal components: Steel, Stainless steel or Aluminium for load-bearing structural parts
  • Plastic carrierlight, corrosion-free, economical for medium loads
