What is chloroprene rubber (CR)?
ChloropreneRubber (CR, Chloroprene Rubber), often known under the trade name „neoprene“, is a synthetic rubber that is characterised by Polymerisation of chloroprene (2-chloro-1,3-butadiene). Its balanced combination of mechanical strength, Resistance to ageing and chemical resistance makes it one of the most versatile elastomers for technical applications.
Properties
- Good resistance to weathering, ozone and ageing even without special protective additives
- Average to good Oil- and fuel resistance, better than natural rubber (NR), but less than NBR or FKM
- Temperature resistance of approx. -40 °C until +100 °C
- High mechanical strength and good abrasion resistance
- Self-extinguishing due to the chlorine content, therefore flame-retardant
- High elasticity and good cushioning properties
- Good adhesion to metals and textiles, ideal for Rubber-Metal Composite Parts and Rubber-fabric composite parts
Areas of application and material combinations
CR is often used in Seals, Sealing lips, hoses, conveyor belts, Vibration dampers and cable sheathing. In the automotive industry, it is used for V-belts, sleeves and hoses. Due to its flame resistance, it is used in safety-relevant areas such as mining, railway and shipbuilding as well as in protective clothing. In combination with fabric reinforcements or Metal inserts The result is durable, resilient components for industrial use.
