What are mould cavities?

In elastomer production, mould cavities, also known as cavities or nests for short, are the shaping cavities in a mould. Injection moulding-, Formpress- or Transfer tool, in which rubber or plastic parts are given their final geometry during the production process. They significantly determine the shape, dimensional accuracy and surface quality of a component.

 

Function and significance of mould cavities / cavities

Each cavity forms the negative of the component to be produced. In series production, several cavities (multiple moulds) are often integrated into one mould in order to produce several parts in parallel and thus increase productivity. In practice, when we talk about a 1-cavity, 2-cavity or 10-cavity mould, we are referring to the number of cavities.

The design of the cavity is particularly important for rubber and elastomer components in order to Burr formation and to avoid a uniform Vulcanisation to guarantee the mould. The surface structure and treatment of the cavity influence demoulding, the surface quality of the component and the wear resistance of the mould.
