What is sampling?

In engineering, sampling is the testing and approval of sample parts of a new or revised product or manufacturing process. It serves to ensure the dimensional accuracy, function, material properties and processability of a component, including rubber, plastic or composite parts.

Objectives of the sampling

Sampling is intended to ensure that the part produced meets the technical specifications. Typical test scopes are

Sampling is often part of a quality-assured approval process, e.g. as part of PPAP (automotive), VDA or internal test plans.

Types of sampling

  • Initial sample inspection (EMP/EMPB) at the first start of production
  • Follow-up sampling, e.g. for requalification after a longer production interruption
