What are moulded rubber parts?

Moulded rubber parts are customised elastomer components that are produced in a Tool through Vulcanisation are moulded. They are made from raw rubber compounds that are moulded under pressure and heat and then permanently cross-linked. In contrast to semi-finished products or profiles, moulded rubber parts are three-dimensionally shaped individual parts with high dimensional and functional accuracy.

They are usually produced using the following processes:

Moulded rubber parts are used as sealing, protective, bearing or connecting elements and are adapted to the respective operating conditions such as chemical, thermal and mechanical loads. Through different Shore hardening, The rubber moulded parts are adapted to the respective technical function and cover functions ranging from soft damping elements to high-strength sealing or bearing components.

Functions & applications of moulded rubber parts

Moulded rubber parts are relevant components in machines, vehicles and appliances due to their elasticity, media resistance and freedom from deformation:

  • Sealing: reliable separation of media such as liquids, gases or dust
  • Vibration and shock absorptionAbsorption and reduction of mechanical vibrations and shocks
  • Elastic mounting: decoupling of components, e.g. for motor or machine mounts
  • Electrical insulation: protection of sensitive components from current or flashovers
  • Protection and enclosure: Covers or protective caps for components
  • Power transmission: elastic connecting elements to compensate for movements and tolerances

Thanks to precise shaping and material selection, moulded rubber parts can be functionally adapted to their task and are used in various industries:

  • Mechanical and plant engineering: Seals, bearing bushes, Vibration dampers and protective elements
  • Automotive industry: Stoppers, Damper, Cable bushings and engine mounts
  • Medical technology: sterile silicone moulded parts, valves and membranes
  • Electronics: Insulations, Sealing lips, button caps and Housing seals
  • Aerospace: high-precision sealing and vibration elements for vacuum environments
  • Food technology: FDA-compliant seals and connecting elements made of Silicone or EPDM

Components & materials of moulded rubber parts

The choice of a suitable elastomer determines the service life and function of the moulded rubber part. Different types of rubber are used depending on the medium, temperature range, chemical load and mechanical requirements:

  • NBR (nitrile rubber): oil and fuel resistant, standard material for hydraulic and machine components
  • EPDMWeather, ozone and vapour resistant, ideal for water and outdoor applications
  • FKM (Viton®): high chemical and temperature resistance, for aggressive media
  • Silicone (VMQ): very elastic, operating temperatures from -60 °C to +200 °C and biocompatible, suitable for medicine and food technology
  • NR (natural rubber): very good tear resistance and elasticity, very good cushioning properties
  • CR (neoprene): flame-retardant and weather-resistant, frequently used in electronics and building technology
  • TPE (thermoplastic elastomers): recyclable, can be combined with plastic carriers to form composite components

To ensure that moulded rubber parts are permanently resilient and functional, their design is adapted to improve assembly, sealing effect and durability:

  • Mouldings, bridges and Sealing lips for function integration
  • Inserts made from Metal or Plastic to increase the rigidity
  • Defined wall thicknesses for controlled elasticity, deformation and damping
  • Surface treatments or coatings to reduce friction or wear
